My story

I'm incredibly proud to be patron of FLACK ~ a social enterprise and registered charity based in Cambridge that benefits people who are or have been homeless. It's unique in that everyone - homeless, housed, staff, volunteer, service user -  pulls together to write and produce a great listings magazine for Cambridge with articles, poetry and reviews.

I learned about the challenges faced by the homeless community in Cambridge when I starred in the film 'Stuart: A Life Backwards' which was a pivotal role in my career. Homelessness impacts people for life and in many cases causes mental health problems and drug and alcohol addictions. It's a cause that means a hell of a lot to me personally as I know from my own experience how tough it is to battle addiction. I am so proud of everyone at FLACK, including studio artist Toby Peters, who has been sober for 5 years after many years of alcoholism and homelessness. Toby has now gained full-time employment with FLACK and is involving its homeless members in making the most extraordinary films.

I've been supporting FLACK since it began as the dream of its founder Kirsten Lavers. Last year many of my fans helped to keep FLACK going with an amazing response to their urgent fundraising appeal and in February 2012 I drove across Siberia to raise money for three very special charities including, of course FLACK.

I'm so grateful for your support. FLACK's immediate future is secure for the next few months but they still need our help to ensure that their inspirational work with homeless people can continue for as long as it's needed.

Here’s why in Kirsten’s words:

"Most important is the investment and achievements of our 33+ homeless members which is so rewarding - I can't begin to tell you .. when we started I had people telling me you'll never get homeless people to turn up and give their time for free ... NONSENSE !! they are not only loving it, being involved with FLACK is making a real and noticeable difference to everyone's lives. Two heroin addicts are now COMPLETELY clean, two alcoholics have gone through detox and are sustaining their sobriety, we've got 4 people into employment, smiles on people's faces, opinions expressed, creativity flowing ... this really is ground breaking work. For every £1 invested in FLACK we're returning at least £3 of savings to the public purse and social value (eg Heroin addict costs £13,200 per year)!"

You can find out much more about FLACK on their website and do check out their YOU Tube Channel for some of Toby's inspirational films. If you can afford to give that’s fantastic but you can also really help by spreading the word – tell everyone you know about FLACK and if you live in Cambridge buy FLACK  magazine – it only costs £2 and you’ll find it’s an inspirational read packed full of great things to do and see in a fabulous city.

thank you
