Virgin London Marathon 2010 · 25 April 2010 ·

Women are still getting breast cancer and dying from it. That’s why Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer have joined forces to become the UK’s largest dedicated breast cancer research charity. And with your help, together we can put an end to breast cancer, once and for all.

Story

Thanks for taking to time to visit my JustGiving Page

As most of you know in February 2009 I was diagnosed with a malignant thyroid cancer. I underwent an operation to remove my thyroid, lymph nodes of the neck and chest, followed by radioiodine treatment. After a long year for me and the family I got the all clear a few days ago....!

This in a roundabout sort or a way is why I have emailed you today as I am running the 2010 London Marathon for The Breast Cancer Campaign Charity and aiming to raise a minimum of £2000 in the process for them.

As you know I am not exactly designed for marathon running (although some people would say I am twice the man Haile Gebrselassie is), however I wanted to raise money for a cancer charity to aid future research and treatment and can not think of a better challenge and way.

So why the Breast Cancer Campaign?

Unfortunately there are currently no large charities dedicated to thyroid cancer that enter the London Marathon (perhaps Clare Balding will be setting one up soon).

The BCC is currently supporting 114 projects worth over £15.6 million in 44 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland. Over the past 13 years, the BCC has awarded 281 grants with a total value of over £28 million to universities, medical schools / teaching hospitals and research institutes across the UK and Ireland. Of particular interest to me is the work the BCC does in -

Genetics: to gain a greater understanding of the genetics of cancer, learning more about genes we already know are involved in cancer and to find new ones.

Metastasis & angiogenesis: to ascertain more about how cancer grows and survives in the body, and how it then spreads around the body

Prevention: to know more about the relationships between diet, environmental and lifestyle choices and cancer

Anything you give will be greatly received and go towards a better future for many people that unfortunately we are all very often directly linked to.

See you at the finish and thanks very much…..
