How would you feel if you had to walk 3 kilometres to collect water from a well while a nearby golf course is using 3 million litres of water per day, as it is happening in some communities in Bali?

And what would you do if your government refused you access to a borehole, forcing you to make a 300km round trip or to collect water from depressions in the sand, while a brand new luxury tourist lodge is allowed to drill for water for guests and a swimming pool, as was the case in Botswana?

Did you know that some hotels in Zanzibar use up to 2,000 litres of water per guest per day, while a villager consumes only an average of 30 litres? And that a golf course in Thailand uses as much water as 60,000 rural villagers? Much evidence shows that often, our holidays do not benefit local people and the environment in the way that we would hope. Water is a precious natural resource. We couldn’t live without it. However, endemic poverty and climate change means that more than one in six people worldwide - 894 million - don't have access to a basic amount of safe water. This includes people living in many of our favourite holiday destinations.

All too often, tourism negatively impacts local people’s right to water, or creates situations of stark inequity.

We believe that this dramatic situation can be changed and that a future in which the water rights of communities living in tourism destinations are protected must be ensured.

To achieve this goal, Tourism Concern has launched its Water Equity in Tourism programme (WET).  In partnership with local communities and a range of experts, we are working to create evidence, raise awareness, influence, challenge the tourism industry and governments, empower local people to demand change, and invest in future solutions.

Our exciting three year programme includes grassroots research and partnership work with local groups to support them in ensuring their water rights are protected; campaigning and lobbying for change; and the production of tools and frameworks to guide  improved practice in tourism, particularly in developing countries.

Our objective is ambitious but realistic – all the parties involved can benefit equally from tourism. To achieve it we need your help!

Through your donation you will help us ensure that the water rights of poor communities in tourism destinations are protected and that our holidays benefit rather than harm.
