My story
Education in the remote northern region of Pakistan is haphazard at best. Government funding is often unforthcoming; hamlets, villages and entire regions can have little in the way of educational facilities leaving thousands of children unable to gain even a basic level of tuition.
The primary focus of the Wild Frontiers Foundation in 2012 is to continue our work on building, furnishing, supplying educational materials and uniforms for the Baleygon School, in Pakistan's remote Hushe Valley.
This is a project we started in 2010. Wild Frontiers embarked on its first charity trek that year when founder, Jonny Bealby, and a hardy group of eight trekked up to the ‘Throne Room of the Mountain Gods’ for a view of the second highest, and most dangerous mountain on earth. K2 stands at 8611 metres above sea level and arriving at Concordia, the crossroads where those lucky enough to reach are gifted the most intense of mountain views, is a significant achievement in itself. This challenge helped to raise around £10,000 for Baleygon School, just across the mountains in the Hushe Valley.
The funds raised are being used to build the walls and ceiling needed to shelter the children throughout the harsh winters experienced in this corner of the globe, but as the walls go up we are looking at the longer terms sustainability of this school. As such, the K2 Charity Trek is back for August 2012 (click for full itinerary) with the intention to raise a similar total in order to provide desks, chairs and the required teaching materials so ensure that there is a lasting legacy here, and not simply a one-off donation.
We are asking all clients who sign up on this trip to raise a minimum of £500 for the Wild Frontiers Foundation, which will go directly to the school, and there is also time built into the itinerary to visit the project itself and see the work we are doing with your own eyes. In the meantime, the short video and selection of photographs below should give you an idea of what to expect should you decide to take on the challenge for yourself.
