Story

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The Yellow Beetle Challenge (YBC) started in January 2011 with the initial aim to raise &pound;10,000 for the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) by cycling from London to Paris, running the New Marathon and climbing to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Since then the YBC has really taken off with hundreds of people taking part in everything from bag-packing at their local supermarket to walking the Yorkshire Three peaks, and parachute jumping to cycling for 12 hours non-stop. So far the YBC has raised over &pound;28,000 for the RHN.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;">Over eight days in May 2012 Richard Barnes, Paul Mace, Adrian Copland, James Burke, Paul Riddel and Mike Shattock plan to cycle from Lands End to John O&rsquo;Groats averaging approximately 120 mile per day.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Why?</span></span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;">On 2 January 2010 Samantha Shattock (Sam) suffered a cardiac arrest at the age of forty-one. As a result of her heart stopping for over forty minutes Sam has suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury. Sam is now being cared for at The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) in Putney, SW London. Sam has been a patient at the RHN since May 2010 and is now receiving the very best in therapy, treatment and care. Despite Sam making some good progress since May 2010 she is still a long, long way from a full recovery and the realistic likelihood is that Sam will never come home.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Prior to January 2 2010 Sam led a perfectly normal life. She worked, exercised, walked her dog and was a fantastic mum to her two teenage children. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;</span></span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;">It&rsquo;s called <strong>The Yellow Beetle Challenge</strong> because Sam was known in her home town for driving her yellow VW Beetle.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;">Neuro-disability may come without warning and could happen to anyone; it can be caused by brain damage as a result of a car crash, a stroke or even a severe asthma attack. It may come progressively through a degenerative disease such as Huntington&rsquo;s or Multiple Sclerosis. Neuro-disability can change your life forever.<br></span><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;"><br></span><span style="font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;">The RHN is a national hospital specialising in caring for and rehabilitation for patients like Sam who have suffered brain injuries. The hospital is a registered charity and needs to find a shortfall f &pound;2 million per year to continue with their unique and fantastic range of therapies and care. Money raised via the Yellow Beetle Challenge </span><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">will fund the RHN to help people rebuild lost skills, creating new futures that are life-changing, not life-ending. To give mobility and independence to people who are unable to move; a voice to people who cannot speak; dignity and greater quality of life to those who have to depend on others.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">Please sponsor us in our very ambitious challenge to cycle the length of mainland Britain in&nbsp;eight days.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">Many thanks</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">&nbsp;</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">Richard Barnes, Paul Mace, Adrian Copland, </span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: &amp;amp;amp;quot;">James Burke, Paul Riddel and Mike Shattock</span></strong></p> <p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Thanks for taking the time to visit&nbsp;our JustGiving page.</p> <p>Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
