Avante Lençois is a community action group led by young people and social workers at the outskirts of Lençois, a city located in the inland of the Brazilian region of Bahia . The historical city belongs to the National Park of Chapada Diamantina, Brazil’s most important ecotourism routes.

The association provides arts, citizenship and educational workshops for 75 children and teenagers at risk, plus courses in computer skills as well as a program involving adolescents in the daily management of the association. This involves about 40 young adults on site, at the “Canto do Povo”, the community centre, which was constructed by the locals, and funded by ABC Trust.

They also run a community newspaper, a radio station, a library and offer Internet access (for the “digital integration”). More than 8.000 persons benefit from the newspaper and the radio, and 800 from the library and the Internet access.

For the last 11 years, Avante Lençóis has been giving many opportunities to the residents of Lençois.The association has been indirectly generating employments, business start-ups, and more specifically hope. This way, the residents are able to make their professional career in their own city, without the obligation of moving to bigger centers, and build up their life within respect, dignity and ethics. The association also prevents from social exclusion, drugs problems and delinquency.

ABC Trust provides core funding towards salaries; in 2006 this plans £ 8,000.

In order to respond the children and teenagers needs, Avante Lençois requires an extra funding of £ 10,000. For this year the community action group aims to:

·       Build a new education centre for the children

·       Get children’s books and educational toys

·       Purchase material for the citizenship and education workshops

·       Provide extra meals for the children  

·       Get scholarships for the young students
