My story

Four years ago Emma (aged 13 years) was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour and as a result lost her sight.  Determined to carry on being as active as she was before losing her vision Emma became a regular participant of Sheffield Actionnaires (a multi-sports club for blind and partially sighted children) run by Action for Blind People.  But now the unthinkable has happened.  Emma has suffered a serious stroke and is left unable to walk or talk properly.  It is uncertain as to how much longer Emma will have to live.

Emma lives at home with her mum, dad and younger sister Katie.  Caring for Emma is mentally exhausting for them all, and Emma’s illness has had a big impact on the dynamics of the whole family.  Walking upstairs is now very hard not only for Emma but for the family trying to get her there.  To make life a little easier, they are adapting the conservatory to make the living room bigger to enable Emma’s special bed to fit downstairs.  The NHS is willing to provide an electric wheelchair to help Emma get around, but the family will have to spend money on it to modify it for Emma’s use.

Stuart, a club co-ordinator at Sheffield Actionnaires is aiming to raise a minimum of £5,000 to help Emma and her family, by cycling from Carlisle to Sheffield via the Action for Blind People offices in Preston, Liverpool and Manchester - a total of 207 miles.  The bike ride will commence on Wednesday 4th June 2008 and will be completed on Saturday 7th June 2008.
