About Action on Addiction

Addiction is the biggest preventable killer in the UK. 
We take action to disarm addiction.  We do this through research, treatment, family support, education and training.

The charity’s vision is for people to be free from addiction.
It is taking action to achieve this in a number of ways:

Through pioneering research which will allow the charity to have a greater understanding of addiction and how better to respond to it.
 
By defining clinical excellence in its residential and structured day treatment programmes across England.
 
Through providing more seamless and consistent care for addicts and their families.
 
Supporting families and children most affected by addiction.
 
Offering world class, degree-level professional education to those working in the field.
 
And by campaigning on key political issues.

Our history

Action on Addiction, the Chemical Dependency Centre and Clouds are delighted to announce their merger.  They have created one unique new charity that will encompass all the critical areas of addiction: research, prevention, training, treatment, rehabilitation and support for families. 

The new charity, Action on Addiction will combine the expertise of these three organisations, which will be a vital step towards tackling the problems of addiction in our society as effectively as possible.  

Action on Addiction

Action on Addiction is the only independent UK research charity dedicated to seeking new ways to prevent and treat nicotine, alcohol and drug abuse. Action on Addiction was instrumental in establishing the National Addiction Centre where we continue to fund research.

The Chemical Dependency Centre
The Chemical Dependency Centre aims to improve the lives of people affected by alcohol or drug dependency by providing high quality, abstinence-based treatment options which integrate 12-step recovery programmes and other appropriate therapies.

Clouds
Clouds provides treatment, rehabilitation and support services which offer the greatest hope of the fullest possible life to anyone affected by addiction, including families, and through its professional education courses helps to develop a workforce capable of delivering such services.
