Asthma is a condition which affects almost 1 in 5 households in the UK alone, with someone dying from an asthma attack every 7 hours. Much of this can be avoided through better fitness, education, medication and support.
The charity I am running for, Asthma UK, is one of the leading funders of asthma research in this country. Through this research we will be able to increase our understanding of the basic immunological mechanisms of asthma and how anti-asthma drugs work. Ultimately, this will allow us to develop more effective approaches to therapy.
The funding raised by Asthma UK also pays for the Asthma UK Adviceline, which is staffed by asthma nurse specialists. This service provides practical help and advice to sufferers such as myself, but plays an especially important role for parents of young children with the disease, for whom an attack can be a frightening experience.
