Last year, I read a book about United Nations aid workers, and the dangers they faced out in the field. It made me think about just how lucky I am, and how others have the confidence and some would say bravery to give it all up, go to the other side of the world, away from all they know, and work for the good of others.

Now, personal circumstances stop me from doing that (a little conveniently, I don't think I'm made of the Right Stuff!), but I still wanted to do my bit.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent international medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid in more than 60 countries to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters or exclusion from healthcare. In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centres for malnourished children and offers MSF Logomental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells, dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting.

I'm going to be cycling the London marathon route twice over, in one day: when I get to the end (presuming I get there in one piece), I'm simply going to turn around, and cycle back!

Reasons that I shouldn't be doing this (and you should therefore dig-deep):

I drink too much;
I don’t exercise at all;
I am terribly unfit;
It’s very very very hard.
