Our local sibling service came into my life and family when we were at crisis point. They not only supported my daughter but myself, they were without a doubt invaluable at a very difficult time, the coping strategies and support helped enormously. The work of Sibs makes a huge difference to families, it works with local authorites to help them develop services like the one that helped us. It also offers parents and siblings telephone and on-line support. It saddens myself to think of so many who could benefit but miss out due to funding.
Please improve the lives of 'young siblings'and give a young sibling a sense of importance again.
Sibs is the national organisation for people who grow up with a disabled brother or sister. There are over one and a half million siblings in the UK, with about 2500 young siblings living in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Many siblings become second carers in the family for their brothers and sisters. They live with feelings of loss, anxiety , isolation, and frustration. They have specific needs that often are not provided for by mainstream services and that come second to those of their disabled brother or sister. Sibs works to enrich their lives by: providing support and coping strategies to siblings; training workers in how to run grups that bring together siblings to remove isolation; supporting parents; and influencing local authorities.
£10 pays for a new webpage activity that a young sibling can access for a coping strategy.
£20 pays for telephone support for a worried parent on how to supppor a sibling.
£100 will pay for a 5 young siblings to receive emotional support and link with a professional in their area.
£1,000 pays for 100 professinals to receive training on supporting siblings.
£30,000 will fund direct support and information fro 5,000 young siblings.
