My story
ABF The Soldiers’ Charity
The Afghan Memorial Run 27 September - 7 October 2012
Sergeant Sonia Clamp, Royal Army Physical Training Corps
Capt (Tfc Offr (EW)) Nicky Jefferson, ROYAL SIGNALS
Sergeant Sonia Clamp and Capt Nicky Jefferson are to undertake a gruelling challenge which consists of an eleven day running endurance event to mark the 11 anniversary of the Afghanistan Campaign. This arduous event will start at the National Memorial Arboretum, Stafford on 27 September 12 and finish at Ternhill, Shropshire on 7 October 12.
Sonia and Nicky want to commemorate the lives of service personnel killed in action during the eleven year Afghanistan campaign by running the equivalent of nearly 17 marathons in 11 days (1 mile for every British Service person who has lost their life in Afghanistan). The aim is to to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity because after 35 years combined service, they want to give something back to those who have given so much in the service of their country. Sonia has organised and co-ordinated the event herself asking Nicky to run with her to help raise money and awareness.
Richard Hackett, The Soldiers’ Charity Regional Director for the West Midlands said: “I am full of admiration for Sonia and Nicky. To set themselves this gruelling event to commemorate those who have given their lives and to raise money for The Soldiers' Charity shows individuals who are both resilient and caring. The money raised will go directly to helping soldiers and their families in the region so I hope that people will support them by donating on their Just Giving website “Afghan_Memorial_Run”.
The Soldiers’ Charity gives a lifetime of support to soldiers, former soldiers and their families in times of need. The immediate help offered is a lifeline but the charity looks to the future, keeping ahead of the game, finding the best ways to give medical, technical and financial support to give the best possible outlook for the men and women who sacrifice so much for us. Over the past two years there has been a 30% rise in people seeking help and this is expected to increase with the continuing operations in Afghanistan.
