About Against Breast Cancer
The UK has the worst breast cancer mortality rate in Europe.
Against Breast Cancer funds unique research into breast cancer. Our aim is to find vital information to increase survival after diagnosis and ultimately to discover a vaccine against breast cancer.
The Against Breast Cancer research team, based at University College London, examines three distinctive areas of patients being treated for breast cancer:
Biochemistry
Immunology
Diet and Lifestyle
The research team is leading an innovative research programme which analyses how the cancer cell, patients' natural resistance and their environment interact. Our emphasis on the prevention of secondary spread of the disease is ground-breaking in breast cancer research.
Our unique Diet & Lifestyle study, working with women who already have breast cancer to find ways to maximise survival, is taking place in over 50 hospitals across the UK. This is the largest study of its type in the world.
Our history
Against Breast Cancer was registered in May 1993 to raise funds for unique research into breast cancer, focusing particularly on metastatic disease (secondary spread) and survival after breast cancer and by 1996 the first £1m in sponsorships and donations was raised.
The name of the charity was originally Action Against Breast Cancer, but this was changed to Against Breast Cancer in January 2001.
In 2005 the UK National Clinical Research Network adopted the Diet & Lifestyle Study, the largest of its kind in the world.
During 2007 the charity carried out some informal research amongst supporters and taking on board all the feedback developed a new logo and strap line to reflect our single-minded vision: seeking a vaccine against breast cancer.
The new logo was launched in 2008 to coincide with the charities 15th anniversary year. 2008 also saw the 50th UK hospital and the 2,000th patient recruited to the Diet & Lifestyle Study.
