Case study: donations in action

Balkhis is the first child in her family. Her parents haven’t had a chance to attend school. Her father runs a small shop in Bomani, a rural town that suffered from bad harvest this year, and is now relying on government food relief.

In the local community, it is the tradition that girls don't go to school and get married at a very early age. However, 16-year-old Balkhis is determined to become an independent woman.

Balkhis stood out as one of the very best pupils in primary school. She decided that she will one day become a doctor, because she had seen too many people around her dying from preventable diseases. She wants to build hospitals in rural areas, launch vaccination campaigns, and "help people get medical services without struggling to come to towns".

Because school costs at the secondary level are so high, she had no chance of pursuing her studies. Fortunately, she received an Aiducation scholarship, and she is now a full time student, on her way to become a doctor.
