Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page where you can find out a little more about the fundraising I am doing on behalf of Brain Tumour UK
http://www.braintumouruk.org.uk/
Over the course of the next couple of months I shall be taking part in various running events which, in total, will see me cover a distance of 100k (hence the really original name - "Alan's 100k Challenge"). Starting on the evening of Thursday 13th August with a leisurely 5k, my route thereafter will see me take part in various 10k events around Scotland which include, amongst others closer to home, trips to Oban, the Isle of Arran, Scone Palace and Pitlochry. As a little incentive to "keep on running" the final 10k will now take place on the 22 November in, of all places, sunny Lanzarote!! (see foot of this message for list of completed events)
The background to my fundraising efforts, as many of you visiting my page will know, relates to the case of my father, who, in April of 2008, was diagnosed with a Grade 4 brain tumour, a glioblastoma, the most aggresive form of this particular disease. Unfortunately due to the location of the tumor, surgery was ruled out by the team at the Western General in Edinburgh. A course of radiotherapy was to be followed by 6 sessions of chemotherapy, however after only the first of these, he was to suffer from irreversible liver damage. As it transpired further treatment was rendered impossible and after a brief spell in Strathcarron hospice he was to sadly pass away on the 2nd April 09, just under a year from initial diagnosis, at the age of 65.
What struck me perhaps more than anything about this disease is how it has the ability to strike down those, in otherwise perfect health. My father was a fit and active man and loved nothing more than to help others, whether it was that job that needed done, or himself raising funds for cancer research (approx £18,000 over the years) through the donation of his very own handmade Georgian Doll’s Houses. During his treatment I was actively involved in discussing his case with the team at the Western General and of course scoured the net in the hope of unearthing an option that could somehow reverse his misfortune. Clearly, it is absolutely imperative, that we see more funds being directed towards research into the causes, cures and treatment of brain tumors. I hope that this small effort on my part will contribute towards this greater goal.
