Many of you will not have known me when I was younger and myself was a cancer sufferer. I remember the painful array of emotions that I went through and although I remember the anguish for my family I was not fully aware of what they were going through. However recently Mrs Parkin who, along with her husband owned one of the horses I ride (Keen Fox aka Tatty)  passed away as a result of a brain tumour. I visited her the day before her fight ended, and I saw Cancer so much more clearly from the other side- the side of the onlookers and loved ones. It was heart breaking to see. Mrs Parkin had been taken out of hospital by her family for her final days, and Macmillan nurses were able to occasionally visit to ease this difficult time for herself and her family. I know personally of the horror that cancer can bring, but now I have seen it as it actually sucks life away from those who you care about. It was seeing this that inspired me to do the BUPA Great North Run as part of Team Macmillan. I hope I can raise enough money to make a difference to more cancer sufferers, and their loved ones as the support from Macmillan nurses seems to be one thing in these fraught times that you can trust and rely on.
