Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I have signed up to join a team from Mission Direct to spend 12 -27 June 2010 working in Rukungiri, Uganda, where I will be involved in practical work at their projects which includes:
- further building work at Rukungiri Modern Primary School, which provides education and accomodation for around 800 children, most of which are orphans (many through the HIV/AIDS epidemic)
- providing accomodation for another 30 young people, to allow them to live at a Vocational Training Centre, which provides skills for them to gain employment, after they have left school
- Visiting smaller projects for disabled children
NB: The cost of this trip is £1395 - this cost has been paid 100% by myself. Any additional donations that YOU make through this page will go straight to Mission Direct's project in Uganda, not on my trip cost.
This trip will be a major difference from my office-based job in the IT industry, but is an opportunity to practically support people in severe poverty, showing them love and compassion, and providing for their very basic accomodation/education requirements. The average GDP in Uganda is around £300, which is around 1% of the UK's, and the country is ranked in the bottom 15% poorest countries in the world. Mission Direct is sending about 5 teams during 2010 to Rukungiri, with around 80 people so far volunteering to take part; they also have teams in several other Third World countries.
Prior to this trip, I have worked with StARR Romania Relief (visiting Romania on 12 trips) on a variety of projects between 1995 and 2009, including projects at Orphanages, a Baby Hospital, and working with Families in Extreme Poverty, in the Botosani area of Romania ( http://our.photosnaps.org.uk/p61827220.html )
