MY TREK TO THE SIMIEN MOUNTAINS OF ETHIOPIA 
                          FOR STREET CHILDREN  OF AFRICA

On the 15th of November 2007 I fly to Addis Ababa to take part in a sponsored trek in the Simien Mountains in aid of  RETRAK.  Over the next 10 days I will be part of a group trekking 80 kms through the Simien Mountains in northern Ethiopia to the summit of Ras Dashen at 4543 meters.

In Uganda, street kids are known as 'Buyaaye' - which means 'street-rats' or literally 'vermin'. RETRAK has proved that with the right care & approach these kids can be helped to realise their potential, discover their worth & discover an alternative to living on the streets. Initial contact is made through football training, feeding programmes & medical clinics. But the real aim is to help kids return to their families if possible. Where there's been abuse or the family is unwilling or unable to have the child back, RETRAK finds new families through their foster care scheme.

Children are helped to go back to school, learn new skills or, for older ones, to start their own businesses. Over 500 children have found sustainable lives off the streets through RETRAK's work. RETRAK have programmes in Uganda, Kenya & now Ethiopia.
