I have been registered blind for over a decade and have always been interested in fitness. Recently I have stepped up my running and I am currently training to compete in ultramarathons. Being blind introduces a number of challenges to my training. However despite my lack of vision I took the decision to train solo outdoors. I achieve this through utilising RunKeeper, which is a GPS enabled running application for smartphones.
With audio cues I am able to train on a memorised 3-mile route that I run repeatable to achieve my daily targets. The pairing of audio cues with my memorised route allows me to “feel” where I am, for example by the camber of the curb underfoot I am able to recognise my relative position on the pavement. Other cues such as a change in surface also indicate my location; a change to grass would mean I have veered slightly off course and the same for a change in the pavement surface. I am able to detect the curb surface from the pavement so make slight adjustments to my footfall to stay in position. This does introduce a number of other issues, as I have to assume the route stays constant. But thanks to litter, random objects and my mind wandering I often trip or run into posts.
This summer on June the 24 I will be competing in the Cotswolds 100 UltraRace. A 100-mile marathon through the Cotswolds, this will involve me running non-stop for 24 hours. I will be broadcasting the race live through RunKeeper, so anyone will be able to watch real time progress of my run.
I am competing in this ultramarathon to raise money for SightSavers, who work to cure and prevent blindness in developing countries. A £5/$8 donation can give the gift of site. Please feel free to donate more or less than that, anything will help SightSavers work towards their goals.
I will also be producing a number of posters and t-shirts that will be on sale shortly to generate more funds for SightSavers.
You can keep track of my training, check out products I will be releasing soon at AndAdapt.
