Mens 10k Glasgow Run · 15 June 2008 ·

The Greyhound Awareness League is Scotland's largest independent charity helping to rehome over 200 retired or abandoned Greyhounds and Lurchers every year. GAL is run totally by volunteers and receives no financial help from the Greyhound racing industry or the government. It looks after over 75 dogs at any time while it finds loving homes for them as pets.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

I am running the Mens Health 10km Glasgow Run in support of my Charity The Greyhound Awareness League (GAL), of which I am a member. I first became aware of GAL when I adopted my first greyhound Kiera in 2006. GAL are celebrating their anniverary this year having rehomed thousands of rescued Greyhounds & Lurchers since 1998. In order to continue the great work carried out by the charity I would appreciate if you could donate as much money as possible to this valid cause.

Every year around 19,000 greyhounds are bred in Ireland and the U.K for racing.  A huge proportion of these dogs are unsuccessful at the sport as they are not fast enough and never complete their training.  Some become injured and cannot continue.

Around 1000 of these dogs are exported and in total around 12,000 greyhounds are replaced each year in the industry which means these animals become retired or abandoned (or worse).  Even those who do have successful racing careers are retired between the ages of 4 to 6 when they become too old to win.  A greyhound has a life expectancy of approximately 14 years so these are still young dogs with a lot of life ahead of them.

The continued support of GAL will help save the lives of thousands Greyhound/lurchers that would otherwise not have a chance. These dogs are loving, gentle and intelligent creatures who have often been kept in very spartan conditions during their 'professional' lives, and who deserve the chance to live out the rest of their lives in comfort. EVERY PENNY COUNTS!!

THANKING YOU IN ANTICIPATION ANDREW :-)

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Greyhound Awareness League will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
