Hi Everyone,
In our own lifetimes rhinos once roamed across the African plains in their thousands. I have a vivid childhood memory from a family safari near Murchison Falls in Uganda. We returned to our camp breakfast one morning having spotted no fewer than 29 rhinos in a single game drive. Even allowing for a few repeat viewings and some teenage exageration, they were clearly abundant. In fact they could be a real nuisance - being so shortsighted they were known to charge through campfires to the consternation of the mpishi! Tragically these magnificent beasts were all slaughtered by poachers and Idi Amin's soldiers. Now there are NO indigenous rhinos left in Uganda, and only 3724 black rhino listed for the whole of Africa (Dec 2005 figures).
Namibia has the second largest population including some rare desert-adapted variants living in the Kunene region (Damaraland). Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) is an indigenous Namibian NGO that has worked for over 25 years to protect these rhinos through educational, conservancy, research and anti-poaching operations. They are entirely dependent on voluntary contributions from people like us. Please give according to your means - and remember that every little bit counts!
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Save the Rhino International will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support.
