Case story

Amina travelled 20 miles in a bicycle taxi to access the clinic in Somba. She arrived in a critical condition, semi conscious with extremely high fever and severe vomiting. She was pregnant and had malaria. She was immediately treated with a quinine drip and other medication for Malaria. She was kept under observation in a treatment room. A few hours later she regained consciousness and felt a little stronger. Due to the limitations of being a day clinic, she was discharged and given free medication to continue her recovery at home. She eventually made a full recovery. One more hour and she would have probably not survived! 2 days later she gave birth to a premature baby boy at home. Unfortunately, he died 4 days later...

>   In Malawi, 1,120 mothers and 4,200 babies die for every 100,000 live births!!

>   44% of all deliveries are outside healthcare facilities!!! In the UK the figure is 5.1 per 100,000 (mothers) !

> This means that, each year, nearly 21,000 mothers lose their babies when they have barely begun to live.

> Pregnancy is such a dangerous time in a Malawian woman’s life that it is considered unlucky to tell people about it.

> A lack of government resources means that health facilities are often struggling to provide services that can save lives.

>  1 doctor for every 100,000 people, the lowest figure for any country

>   Every minute, a child dies from malaria, yet Malaria is treatable and curable!!!

>  In 2012, 90% of the world’s malaria deaths occurred in Africa and about 460 000 African children died before their fifth birthdays.

>  Pregnant women are particularly at risk of malaria

Do you really need more stats???

Somba Clinic

Somba is based in Mangochi district of Malawi. It is extremely rural and access to health is very limited. The main health concerns are:

* Malnutrition

* Malaria

* Maternal Health

* HIV/AIDS

The Somba Clinic is dedicated to providing medical assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable in Malawi. All services are provided for FREE!!

The following services are available.

* GP services

* Dispensary

* Laboratory

* Vaccinations

* Treatment Facility

* Under 5's Clinic

* HIV/AIDS Clinics

* Antenatal care

* Health Counselling

Somba Clinic treats  an average of 3,000 patients a month, 36,000 per year. The demand is increasing and we expect these numbers to grow.

The aim is to expand into a fully time maternity clinic to allow women to deliver in a proper environment and get proper treatment.

I would like to raise £20,000 to assist towards this clinic to ensure everyone in this area has access to primary health care services.

Just £10 will provide one person healthcare for a year!

It is not a choice, it is their basic Human Right!!

With your help and kind donation we can make the Somba Health Clinic more accessible and replenish it with the necessary medicines required to lower these figures over time.

Please donate generously, your small donation will make a BIG difference in the lives of the people of Malawi.
