My story

The Cathedral Archer Project (CAP) is a day centre that helps people who are homeless.

Homelessness can include sleeping rough, occasional hostel spaces, camping on friends’ floors and sofas, and squatting.

A place of safety and warmth

The CAP is a place of safety and warmth, where homeless and vulnerable people will be welcomed and supported.  Service users include alcohol and substance abusers, street workers, people with learning difficulties and disabilities, refugees and failed asylum seekers from a variety of backgrounds and ages.  They have free access to the facilities and are supported by a team of dedicated project workers who assess all service users and signpost them to relevant services for housing and accommodation, benefits advice, and anything else they may require.

Opportunities

The CAP works with service users on an individual basis to encourage their self-esteem and motivation to help them take their first steps to stability.  There are opportunities to take part in occupational activities and to work towards volunteer roles taking some simple responsibilities within the project with the aims of working towards stability, employability and moving on.

Support

Our service users often present themselves at the project with multi-level needs.  The CAP aims to deal with urgent, immediate needs and then through an assessment process, ascertain how the service user can be supported further, by whom, and what level of support will be carried out by our own project workers.

The aims for each individual are to move them on to the next step from where they first arrived.  The process involves building relationships of trust, making people feel welcomed and cared for and signposting to the most appropriate services.

As service users engage with project workers, many are taken through tried and tested measurement and goal setting systems designed for this client group.  This ultimately moves them forward into accommodation and employment.
