70% of the earth's surface is covered in water, a vast, rarely visited realm inhabited by fascinating and vulnerable wildlife. Despite the remoteness of this ocean world, mankind has managed to bring many species of whales, dolphins, seabirds and seaturtles to the brink of extinction through over exploitation, pollution and destruction of habitat. Even today, several nations continue to hunt whales for commercial and so-called "scientific" purposes, a needless and cruel practice.
As sailors, Gary and Kirstin have had the chance to experience the remarkable beauty of the marine environment first hand and are passionate about its conservation. In May 2006 we will set out to sail from Scotland to South Africa via the Arctic and the Antarctic, a voyage of about 10,000 nautical miles. We undertake this challenging endeavour in support of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, a charity dedicated to the protection of whales, dolphins and their habitat on an international scale. Our fundraising goal is to raise one pound for every mile we sail, equating to a total of 10,000 pounds - money that will be spent directly on the research and campaigns vital to the future of the cetaceans we care so deeply about.
Of equal importance to us is raising awareness about the world's oceans. By sharing our sailing adventures and wildlife encounters with as broad an audience as possible we hope to promote a greater appreciation for the fragile marine environment and to inspire others to cherish it as we do. So please spread the word about our challenge and encourage as many people as possible to follow our voyage at http://www.wanderingalbatross.org
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us. We do not receive a penny of your donation, it goes directly to the Whale And Dolphin Conservation Society and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor us now!
Many thanks for your support.
