Mahila Swarojgar Samiti (MSS) Project
Centers are run in 6 villages in Uttar Pradesh and the total enrolment in MSS schools is around 355 children in total from Class 1-6. There are 7 full time and 1 part time teacher who are engaged in teaching the students. It is notable that in most villages except one the ratio of female to male students is almost 1:1. This is creditable in a state where female infant mortality rates are high and where the male literacy is 70% in comparison to a female literacy rate of only 43%. The total population of the 6 villages is around 3,000. Schools are open 12 months in a year, (except for Sunday and public holidays) and 21/2 -3 hours of classes take place every day.
The aim of these schools is to provide a stepping stone for the children to enter government schools at whichever level required. Thus the students are encouraged to enroll into the local government schools and drop-out levels are monitored.
Given that the majority of the children come from tribal or dalit backgrounds the MSS schools provide a cornerstone to their introduction to the formal education system. There is an urgent need for additional schools to be built along with a centre for training for the teachers. Thus Phase 1 of this project of constructing a new Education Centre is due to be completed shortly. The Education Centre will house more children and also provide the building space required to provide vital training and recruitment of new staff. Phase 2 relates to the building and development of the second of such sites due to commence next year. All your kind and generous gifts will be channeled towards the Phase 2 Project and provide a much needed resource to this impoverished area and to provide more disadvantaged children with a better start in life.
