My story

The Atlantic Ocean is rising fast; with scientists now predicting a 1m rise by the end of the century. Thousands of communities face extinction, unique landscapes will be lost and the whole geography of the Atlantic coastline is set to be reconfigured.  Can we still save our coastal margins, or are we facing the largest forced migration in the Atlantic’s history?

Atlantic Rising is a charity that believes that education is the most important weapon we have in combating climate change.  Today’s school children will inherit the environmental legacy of previous generations and it is vital that climate change is an accessible, relevant and immediate subject of interest for pupils.

In August 2009, a unique expedition sets out overland along the 1m contour line, circumnavigating the Atlantic to launch a network between forty schools in eleven countries around the Atlantic Ocean.  This network will allow secure and direct communication between students all around the ocean rim.  These pupils will build friendships and collaborate on projects with each other on subjects ranging from the Climate Change to Slavery to the History of Music.

Through doing this, students will confront the different global experiences of climate change. The most vulnerable places are the same coastal communities that have been the melting pots for cultural exchange over the last 500 years.  By connecting them through history, we hope to make pupils aware of the interdependence of Atlantic communities.   By encouraging collaboration on climate change projects we hope to highlight the immediacy of the problem and the shared responsibility we have to finding a solution.  By encouraging friendships we hope to make people care about it enough to act.
