My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

We were devastated when we first realised that our beautiful baby, Jack was being transferred from Macclesfield Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) to Alder Hey Hospital at just 3 days old.  We hadn't realised how serious his condition was and had never thought about leaving Macclesfield to go anywhere other than home.  It was scary to think about moving further away from our friends and family, where would we stay? When would we be able to see Jack?  How would we cope?  Following the ambulance there was the worst journey of my life - Why had they put the lights on?  Were they just getting through the lights or had something happened?

When we arrived we were well looked after and made to feel at ease (as much as we could be).  We were put up on camp beds in a room on the neonatal ward, just down the corridor from Jack.  We stayed here for 2 nights before being told that Ronald McDonald House had a room available for us in their 'home away from home'.

The room was amazing - better than some hotels I have stayed in, and the house had shared kitchen lounge and laundry facilities, all just across from the hospital.   As if this wasn't enough, after a couple of weeks they moved us to an apartment for longer stay families, giving us our own kitchen (the freezer was the most important for us to store all his expressed milk - the hospital had run out of space to store it!!), lounge and bathroom - a bit of normality in our unfamiliar situation.

Staying at RMH allowed us to see Jack at any time of the day or night which meant we could be there for all his big operations as well as for his feeds, washes and nappy changes - without RMH we would have missed a lot of these precious times - which were few and far between as it was. The staff and volunteers at RMH were friendly and supportive providing more than just a place to stay and restoring our faith in charity.

Of course it is not only the staff at the hospital and RMH who we have relied on, but also the love and support of our family and friends - we could not have got through it without you. We are now calling upon you to support us again to help us to raise funds for RMH so that this amazing facility can continue to be 'the home away from home' for others as it was for us.
