Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
With limited understanding of what we're letting ourselves in for, Helen, Sas, Nicki and Tessa have signed up to compete in an Arctic Biathlon in aid of the Kids Company.
In late November, we will fly to northern Sweden to compete against other teams in dog sledding, cross country skiing and ice fishing (at this time of year, there are about 5hours of sunlight a day and temperatures will reach about minus 25. So most of it will be in the dark. Which should make things easier...). Despite being a relatively active bunch, we also have to admit to everything from fish phobias, hatred of dogs to clinically bad circulation between us so can't claim to be ideal for the task in hand. But we're hoping to rise to the challenge.
The description of the weekend includes the words 'gruelling' and 'punishing' so it's hardly a holiday but we have to confess to hoping to have a bit of fun along the way. We're covering the costs of the trip ourselves - so your donations will be going towards the Kids Company, which was founded in 1996 to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people.
Many of the 13,500 children reached by Kids Company’s services have experienced severe and multiple trauma. Often these are ‘lone children’ living in chronic deprivation, with little or no support from the adults in their family. Some are young carers struggling to look after younger siblings or parents who are unable to care for them, and many have been forced into drug running, gangs, or prostitution as the only means of survival in their depleted communities.
Kids Company operates through a street level drop-in centre, a post-16 educational institution and a therapy centre in South London, as well as offering therapeutic and social work services in over 30 schools.
So please sponsor us as generously as you can. It's bound to be a tough weekend with a steep learning curve (and possibly the odd stray polar bear), but with your support, we hope to reach our target of raising £3,600 for lone & vulnerable children. Thanks very much,
Team Bangers and Mush
