B.C.T. First Responders are a group of volunteers from the Bentley, Capel & Tattingstone areas who respond to emergency calls on behalf of the East of England Ambulance Service. We have been given comprehensive first aid training in basic life support including the use of a defibrillator and to administer oxygen along with other life saving techniques. We are called out to category A cases which may be life threatening and include chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden cardiac arrest (heart attack), choking or diabetes (hypo) and other serious conditions where a fast local response can save a life.

 

We are called upon at the same time as the ambulance service but because we live in the community we can often arrive on scene before the ambulance crew and in an emergency every single minute counts. The sooner a patient can receive treatment the greater the chance of recovery or survival. Once the ambulance crew arrive then they take over care and treatment of the patient. Our group is a 100% charitable organisation run in conjunction with the ambulance service and we rely solely on donations made by the public and local businesses. First responders do not take any kind of payment either for our time or expenses including the use of our own vehicles to attend an emergency call-out, everything is given freely. All of the equipment that we use including oxygen, defibrillator, high visibility clothing, bandages masks etc are purchased using the donations made to our group. Every penny donated is used to keep this vital service running in our community.
