On the 26 April 1986 the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in exploded. It is the worst nuclear power accident in history. The radioactive fallout formed a cloud which floated over most of modern Europe; however, estimates suggest that received around 60% of the contamination that fell. The consequences of the disaster had, and still are having, a huge effect on human health. Many children are being born today, many of which have special needs, learning difficulties, Cerebal Palsy or Down Syndrome, and who find themselves left in orphanages. The aftermath of the disaster is still very much in lives of Belarusian people and children.
There are charities set up to help the children in the worst affected areas and there is one charity in particular which I would like to help raise money for. Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK) was launched in 1995 and since then, they have done a huge amount for the children in . The charity organise recuperative holidays in the for the children in . Many areas of are still contaminated by radioactivity over 20 years on. This is likely to continue for many, many more years. A week in the is really important for the children and it really boosts their immune system to be in a clean environment, even for such a short amount of time. Not only this, but the charity also organises and sends many aid convoys to which contain medical supplies and resources. They provide holidays in clean parts of Belarus for children who are too ill to go abroad and also sponsors children’s’ hospices, provides support for disabled children (wheelchairs, soft toys) and helps to train new carers in looking after the children.
This summer I travelled to as a volunteer for this charity to help in the summer camp for children who are unable to travel to the . It was an incredible experience and I am certainly going to go back to in 2009. The children come from orphanages in the region of and many of them are mentally or physically disabled. Everyday we organised activities for the children of all capabilities. We supported their care and above all, we made the children smile and gave them a happy and fun holiday away from the orphanages.
The children are inspirational.
I would like to raise £1000 this year for the charity. Please give whatever you can or send me ideas for fundraising! I will be bag packing and collecting at Christmas, as well as various other activities throughout the year. I will keep this page updated with everything I do!
THANK YOU J
