Between the dates given we (Chris and Bev) walked the 4 day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is probably the best known of all Inca Ruins. Dating from 1430, but only discovered by Europeans in 1911, it sits on rocky cliffs at 8000ft above sea level. Although it was never discovered by invading Spanish armies its' entire population is likely to have been wiped out by Small Pox.
During a 4 day mission we walked 25 miles to the ruins. The main challenge was the altitude. The highest point of the trek is 'Dead Woman's Pass' at 13769ft above sea level. Aptly named, as this is the point at which most down-trodden and exhausted husbands nudge their wives over the edge. To give you some idea ot the altitude, at 13000ft oxygen concentrations are only 60 percent that of sea level. Oxygen in the blood falls to levels so low that if you were in hospital you would be rapidly attached to oxygen tank.
Despite these challenges we completed the walk successfully and would be grateful of any contributions to our chosen charity.
