On 11 October 1997, aged 50, Joyce Hirst, my dear Mum was rushed into hospital with a suspected tumour. On 13 October 1997, the tumour was removed and the Doctors discovered that Mum had terminal cancer. Just 7½ months from diagnosis, on 18 May 1998, my Mum’s life was extinguished – she had just made her 51 Birthday. Doctors had discovered the cancer too late and her cancer was too far advanced to be treated. My Mum; my best friend had gone forever – no more words to be spoken, no more memories to be enjoyed.
During those 7½ months, Mum went into Pendleside Hospice twice for respite care. The hospice markedly improved the quality of life for Mum during her stay. This was achieved by medical and specialist nursing care, and the provision of social, emotional and spiritual support for her and our family.
I have never had the opportunity to truly make a financial difference to the Hospice, and am taking this opportunity to give back a little support as a huge thank you for the care they gave to Mum and I.
Cancer affects families every day and the kindness and free support from Hospices around the UK is crucial to keeping patients and families positive in times of sadness and sorrow. Care at Pendleside Hospice is given unconditionally and free of charge to adults who need it regardless of religious or cultural belief.
With other supporters of this cause, I will be walking 8 miles at midnight on 27 June 2009. All monies raised will go to the Pendleside Hospice.
Please join with me to make a difference. I know that times are hard for people right now, so anything from 50p upwards would be much appreciated.
Thank you all for your generosity – every single penny goes towards helping another family suffering from this terrible terrible disease.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Pendleside Hospice Care for Burnley & Pendle gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Thank you for your support. Together, we can make a difference xx
