My mother has lived with Behcets for the past 14 years. Behcets is an inflammatory disease that affects many of the bodies systems, causing some quiet unpleasant symptoms. There is no cure and currently no drugs have been specifically licensed for Behcets.

Recently she has been taking part in a drugs trial for Alpha Interferon. This drug has been trialed in Germany and the USA and has shown that it not only lessons the inflammations, but can reverse the disease process, the majoritty of patients achieve a remission from symptoms for 3-5 years.

Alpha Interferon is given by self administered injection once a week for 26 weeks. Each injection pen costs £50, making a total 26 week course £1200.
Behcets Society have funded 70 patients to take part in the trial, but for the trial to be considered effective they need as many people as possible! This is why I am doing a 300+ mile sponsored cycle ride for the chairty over Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th June 2008.
