My story
The Challenge…
Boston to Austin – Hit the Road Running is a 2,000 mile run designed to raise awareness of three charities: British Heart Foundation (BHF), Help the Heroes/Saulte America’s Heroes (UK and USA respectively) and Young Texans against Cancer (YTAC). These charities were chosen as they all hold a special connection to each of the runners. Rusty Tolliver’s mother is a two time cancer survivor, Scott Jenkins works with cardiac patients in rehabilitation and all three runners have close friends who work in the military and armed forces. In today’s society, the ravages of war, cancer and heart disease affect us all in someway or another, with 1 in 3 people expected to contract cancer or heart disease during their lifetime and since September 2001 to August 2008, 4,683 American’s have died during the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Over 270 UK soldiers have died since 2001 in Afghanistan alone.
The run will start in Boston, Massachusetts on September 15 and will conclude in Austin, Texas (hometown of runner, Rusty Tolliver and a YTAC chapter) on November 27 2010. The three runners: Scott Jenkins (29), Rhys Jenkins (22) and Rusty Tolliver (23) will attempt to run up to 40 miles a day against differing and challenging American terrain and weather conditions. The three men will cross through 9 states, stopping in 100 towns and 9 cities during there grueling 2.5 month run.
The ultimate purpose of the run is to raise money for these charities and thus long term be able to provide hope to those affected by each of the causes. Because of this, gaining publicity is crucial to this campaign being a success. The run not only needs sponsorship through supplies, nutrients and equipment for the three men involved, but press and media coverage is required to raise awareness as well as the all important donations to the charities involved. This proposal is designed to give you the information required for you to make a decision on whether your company will choose to sponsor these three courageous and determined young men who only want to bring hope to those who sometimes feel as if there is nothing left.
We have purposely not set a target as we want people to continuously donate throughout the event.
Thank you for your support
Scott, Rhys and Rusty
