Thank you for visiting our fundraising page - you've come this far so we've done something right!
Speaking on behalf of both of us I'd say that this project is a case of right time and right place. We were looking for a challenge and I think it's fair to say we've found one. Even more rewarding is the prospect that we can actually provide a tangible benefit to some of the people we will be meeting on our travels as we ride our bikes and try to take it all in.
The brief is this -
Brighton to Capetown overland, on two motorbikes. Camping by night and braving harsh Saharan pistes, high Moroccan passes, Cameroonian river crossings, malarial mosquitoes, Congolese bandits, muddy Angolan trails, and everything in between by day. This trip is not for those of a nervous disposition taking in approximately 12,000 miles in 5 months, through 18 countries, 2 tropics and 1 equator! Read more about our progress with preparations and the epic journey on our website here.
Our fundraising target of £4,250 equates to the cost of providing a health worker with the means to reach 20,000 people over a distance of 200 miles. This amount would provide the bike, training for the rider, protective clothing, maintenance, fuel and spares.
Please take a minute to read about Riders for Health. Their projects empower communities and allow the local health services to get treatment to villages in remote areas to relieve suffering and prevent the disruption to the patients and their families who face walking huge distances to get help.
Make no mistake - the roads we will be travelling on will be challenging. However, these are the very same roads used by the people in these countries to transport essential medical supplies to remote communities. We’ll be visiting two of the three main countries that Riders support major operations in (The Gambia and Nigeria) and it’s great that we will be able to help some of the people we meet in the communities we visit along the way. To put things in perspective:
Your £10 could pay for a health worker to travel 100 miles through difficult terrain to take vaccinations to a remote village. Every £1 will make a difference.
