Read this from a bto client and Beatson patient:

"As a doctor, I have seen cancer from both sides and fought against it. Having had cancer three times in the past twelve years, received treatment around the world and having spent the last six years being treated at the Beatson Cancer Centre, I can truly say it is  a world class institution. The charity provides for new research and technology with passionate and compassionate health carers delivering it.

Whilst research is the only way forward to understand and defeat the disease and while the clinical research undertaken at the Beatson is invaluable, maintaining funding for such programmes is imperative.

However, at the Beatson they understand it's not just only about the latest research, technology, equipment  and drugs; it's also about treating the person as a whole. Cancer is a very harrowing experience and  having a charity to provide support not only to the patient but to the patient's family is paramount.

Having had chemotherapy, radiotherapy and two different stem cell transplants, I spent a long time in the haematology bone marrow transplant units. A good day was when I wanted to eat, a better day was when I could get up and a fantastic day was when I could walk out of the ward across the hall to the Friends of the Beatson lounge and receive complimentary therapies such as Reiki or massage, or just sit quietly reading in a cheerful peaceful environment ; it felt like a bit of Heaven while going through hell.

I am indebted with appreciation for the all the help I received which has helped keep me alive. The Beatson Cancer charity is truly  a life support and we must keep it , not only alive, but thriving!

Because it could be you or a loved one.....
Be Beatson proud ....because I am.
Be a donor.....because I am. "

Here's what our runners are saying:

Paul Motion, Partner & Solicitor Advocate
"I have lost several very good friends and family to cancer, several of them younger than me. All of them had children. The Godfather of our first child died of a brain tumor when he was just 38 and he was one of the most brilliant minds I’ve ever encountered. A friend who was a superb rower died when she was only 44. Last November a friend who was a runner and fitness enthusiast lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at 53. So I am running the half marathon because I still have my health and want to make a difference to cancer research."

Lindsay MacNeill, Solicitor
"I am running a leg of the ‘Hairy Haggis Relay’ for Team Glasgow - no doubt stopping Ross, Lewis and Calum setting a course record. I am very proud to be part of such a big bto team fundraising for the Beatson Cancer Charity and I hope we can raise a significant amount to help this fantastic cause. I will be running for family and friends treated and supported by the team at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre."

Lewis Macdonald, Trainee Solicitor
“I’m running the marathon relay with Ross, Lindsay and Calum, as part of the Glasgow office team. The Beatson Cancer Charity provides an essential service for people when they need it most. I’m looking forward to raising as much money as possible for them.”

Lindsay UrquhartAssociate
"I started running to get fit, now I am really looking forward to running in a team with my colleagues and  supporting the Beatson Cancer Charity, being part of a team has helped me to stay focused on my training as I don’t want to let them down on the day.   Thanks to them for pushing me to go the extra mile."

Ross Brown, Senior Solicitor
"I will be doing one of the eight mile legs of the relay as part of the Glasgow office team.  Although I do not have personal experience of the Beatson Cancer Charity, I have several clients who speak very highly of it and it is clear that the help and support it provides is essential to many people."

Kim McLeod, Trainee Solicitor
"I am running the half marathon.  After running the Glasgow 10k with others from bto in October last year I got the buzz for running and decided to push myself to the next level and run my first half marathon.   I am hoping that weeks of painful training will help to raise money for a charity that is such a fantastic cause."

Jill Harris, Solicitor
“This will be my first experience of running a half marathon, which is all a bit scary! However, it’s great the bto team is undertaking the EMF challenge in order to support such a fantastic cause as The Beatson.  It makes it all worthwhile.”

Calum Sweeney, Solicitor
“I have also lost family members to cancer. I’m only too happy to do my bit to support a charity which helps in so many different ways.”

Laura Irvine, Associate
"I am running with colleagues for the bto chosen charity which is a very worthy cause. Run club has been a great way to de-stress with colleagues and get fit.  Thanks to everyone in run club who puts up with my snail’s pace!!"

Lesley Gordon, Partner
"I'm running my first ever race as part of the Edinburgh office relay team. I was inspired to join in with the office team running for such a good cause and although the relay sounds like the easier option, with 4.4 miles for me to get through , it is still no mean feat. I’m hoping the 'gain' after the 'pain' will be for the Beatson Cancer Charity, that relies on you and me to fundraise so that they can continue to provide the wonderful resources at a time of great need. Whether it's receiving cutting edge treatment, having your hair and nails done or simply escaping for some peace and quiet, the Beatson Cancer Charity is there to help."

Ashley Mawby, Partner
“I’ll be running as part of the Edinburgh office relay team along with Lesley, Laura and Lindsay.  Although a last minute addition to the team, I’m happy to run for the Beatson Cancer Charity.  Their work funds the development of pioneering treatments, ground breaking techniques and innovative research at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.”
