Thanks for visiting! This is our fund raising page for our efforts to raise money for the charity "Gemin-i.org" (formally known as 'African Bookcase') The challenge we have decided to embark upon is to drive a "Banger" costing no more than £250 from Rouen in northern France, through a 2000km journey across France, Spain and ending in a place called Cabon da Roca, in Portugal, which is the most westerly point in Europe. All this needs to be acheived over the course of a few days. If anyone out there has ever bought a car for less than £250, you'll probably know from experience that you will barely do 20 miles in it before you break down or before the car starts playing up in some way, so to do over 1200 miles is certainly going to be interesting. Not only that but we are intending on making the return journey also, which will culminate in well over 3000 miles in one weekend! Fun! We have been set a minimum of £1000 which we need to raise for Gemin-i in order to be eligable, and we will do our utmost to raise in excess of that, even if it involves doing daft things! Unfortunatley we have to spend around the same amount along the way, by the time we take into account the cost of the car, insurance, fuel, food etc. This will come out of our own pockets! Any money donated on this site or raised through other means will go directly to the charity, and will not be used towards our own costs in any way! We feel this is more than just a worthy cause, and hopefully our efforts will be enough to make a difference. Any donations you can make will be sent directly to the charity, and if you are a uk taxpayer an extra 28% will be donated on top of whatever you feel you can spare. This way you can be assure that every penny, perhaps an extra 28% if you are UK based, will make it to gemin-i. All donations are done in total security also. Please help us in whatever way you can, thanks for reading! A little about our trusty (hopefully) banger... Our banger was purchased from the local auction from the princely sum of £240. Due to the rising prices of steel, and the abundance of local 'Scrap Collectors' we didnt have a great deal of choice of vehicles capable of carrying 4 people over the distance, as because of the rising value of large cars in scrap (minimum £150 if you take it to the recyclers yourself around here), there weren't many bangers around in the sub £250 category. SO off to the auctions! We came away with this lovely 12 year old peugeot 406. It is a diesel which hopefully will help towards keeping the running costs down, but unfortunately it isnt perfect! The heater blower doesnt want to work, meaning on no doubt one of the hottest weekends in europe its going to be a bit of a sweat! It has also done nearly 150,000 miles, and hasn't got a 3rd gear! Thats only what we've found out in the last day, and im worried there are more suprises to come! But it wouldnt be a challenge with a perfect car! Thanks for looking, and once again any donations will be gratefully received. For more information you can visit www.gemin-i.org, or visit www.sucatarun.com
