In October 2008 Caitriona O’Leary and her Mewari stallion, Chandra, rode 300kms through Rajasthan. Due to developing an abscess on her leg Caitriona had to get a truck with Chandra for the last 75kms as it was no longer possible to ride. The ride aims to raise enough money for the Tree of Life for animals to run education camps in villages which will have far reaching long term benefits. People also benifit from the charity's work; at the moment TOLFA are providing employment for 24 people and that is increasing every couple of months in an area where jobs are difficult to find. At the moment TOLFA are currently sterilizing and vaccinating 20 - 28 dogs a day. Both human and animal welfare are given as reasons for controlling street dog numbers. Spread of zoonoses (diseases that can spread from animals to people) is a particular problem where high densities of dogs and humans live in close association and, in India, rabies is a major concern. 99% of human cases of this fatal disease are transmitted in the saliva of infected dog bites. Other animals, such as herbivores, are also susceptible but do not have the propensity to bite and are hence less of a threat to humans. Dog welfare is likely to be poor if the population is not controlled. This is due to competition for limited resources leading to malnourishment in some individuals, particularly in pregnant and lactating bitches and also a high rate of spread of infectious disease and parasites. You can read more at http://www.vetwork.org.uk/abc.htm

  • £5 Can vaccinate 20 dogs against the fatal rabies disease
  • £25 Can neuter 5 dogs, preventing hundreds of unwanted puppies being born to a life on the streets
  • £45 per month will pay for a driver for the animal ambulance to allow TOLFA to rescue and transport the animals they treat
  • £300 Can buy all the medicine supplies required to treat all the animals that TOLFA sees in a week
  • £1000 Will pay for electricity to be supplied to the shelter for a whole year, enabling the shelter to work at night time when necessary
  • £2500 Can provide the salary for a veterinary doctor to carry out their vital work for a whole year

Caitriona has extensive experience of riding in rural Rajasthan and is fluent in Hindi with a basic grasp of the Mewari dialect so it will be possible to communicate with host farmers on the journey, telling them about the benifits of worming their animals and showing how to dress wounds properly. Chandra was trained by Caitriona as a two year old and they have a strong bond. He is of the local Marwari horse breed and so ideal for riding through the rocky and desert terrain.
