Hammers in hand - we are headed to Cambodia!

During our Chinese New Year holiday (February 13th-16th, 2010), a small group will be travelling to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to begin work with The Tabitha Foundation - an organization dedicated to helping families in need. We will be assisting them in building homes for families who have little more than a tarp or palm leaves to keep them dry.

Our team:

Sue Tummon, Rob Howland, Kelso Beggs, Keriann O'Rourke, Johnny Ray, Mandy Pearson, David MacDonald, Andrew Forsythe, Nick Moraitis, Larissa Matechuk, and Nicole Tripp

In order to do this, we need your help.

As a small team, we have made it our goal to build 6 homes in one day! The houses are sturdy structures made of wood and metal materials that are built up on stilts to remain dry through the rainy seasons in Cambodia. With the typhoon that swept through parts of Cambodia on September 30th, 2009 we can see what an asset a home like this is for families.

To build a house it costs approximately US $1200. This includes all building materials, contractors, fees and the foundations. The families who will be receiving homes have to pay somewhere between US$25 - $100 for their home. On average, a rural Cambodian person makes less than 45 cents per day. This is a lot of money for them and it often takes them up to 3 years to save the smallest amount for their home.

Any money raised on this website above our donation goal will then be used to purchase a clean water well for villages, a pig to feed a family, the safe delivery of a baby and much more.

We are also hoping to collect some cash donations to be given to the People's Improvement Organization. This organization provides food, hygiene, training, schooling and for some children - a place to live. The children who benefit from this organization live in Phnom Penh's city dump. Their job is to sift through mountains of rotting garbage in hopes to find something of value that can be resold to buy food for themselves and their family. Children as young as 5 years old work here.
