This Summer, we (Henry Ulmann, Adam Spring and George Schicht), will be biking the Way of St James for the Heaton Ellis Trust. We are undertaking this daunting 1000km mostly off road challenge to help raise money for the Heaton Ellis Trust, which has been set up to extinguish Motor Neurone disease.
My uncle, David, died of this terrible disease. His brother and his aunt also died from the same disease. His son, my cousin, Geordie has a 50% chance of having this terrible disease.
As with many areas of medical research funding is a problem, perhaps none more so than with MND. As an example, for every person with Mad Cow Disease the Medical Research Council spent GBP 337,000 against just GBP 108 for MND.
The Heaton - Ellis Trust seeks to raise sufficient money to fund the purchase of a new generation DNA sequencing machine for the Neurological research team at King's College Hospital, London and then to finance the research programme for the next 3 years. The lastest technologies are able to read 30,000 times more DNA sequence at only 7 times the cost. So over the next 3 years with the right equipment and support there is a real opportunity to identify those remaining defective genes that can cause MND.
The Charity has no overheads or administration costs to cover meaning that all money raised will pass directly to the appeal
Please watch the youtube clip to the left, it is not pretty but it really does bring it home how lucky so many of us are.
