Story
Those seeking asylum in the UK have experienced untold horrors in their home countries, fled their homes and travelled with great difficulty across the world to find safety here. Yet many find their claims for asylum rejected and are then left homeless, penniless and without the right work or support themselves in the UK.
Host Derby aims to address this injustice by providing temporary accommodation with volunteer hosts in their own homes for a few days or up to a few months, offering a life line for vulnerable individuals. Hosts will be supported to welcome an individual in their home, and guests will be supported to access the right help and re-engage with the asylum system, and move on with their lives.
Host Derby will be run by Upbeat Communities, a local charity based in Derby, in partnership with The British Red Cross, Derby Refugee Advice Centre, Metropolitan Housing and Derby City of Sanctuary.
The money raised will be used to:
- pay for co-ordination costs for the project
- train volunteer hosts
- set up communication channels (phone, online)
- pay for insurance and administration costs
- cover any travel expenses for those staying with hosts
