About Cats Protection

Formed in 1927, Cats Protection (CP) has grown to become the UK’s largest charity dedicated solely to the welfare of cats.

Its nationwide network of 29 Adoption Centres and 260 voluntary-run Branches rehabilitate and rehome around 60,000 cats and kittens every year. CP believes that there is a home for every cat and never puts a healthy animal to sleep.

The charity provides an array of cat care information via its publications, website and National Helpline. It also promotes the benefits of neutering for a happier pet and distributes education packs to a third of schools in the UK.

Cats Protection work is based on its three main aims:

  • To rescue stray and unwanted cats and kittens, rehabilitating and rehoming them where possible
  • To encourage the neutering of all cats and kittens not required for breeding
  • To inform the public about the care of cats and kittens

Our history

Cats Protection (CP) began life in 1927 when a group of like-minded cat lovers, concerned about the treatment of cats, decided to form a society devoted exclusively to promoting their interests.

Changing mission

Launched as an educational society, it soon because clear that Cats Protection would have to carry out practical rescue work if it was to achieve its aims. Thus the charity opened its first permanent centre in 1950 and more were to follow. Today, CP has 29 Adoption Centres and 260 voluntary-run Branches nationwide.

People power

Volunteers and staff form the back bone of Cats Protection. An estimated 6,000 unpaid volunteers give up over six million hours of their time each year to care for cats, handling over 177,000 calls a month from the public.

Growing need

Over the last 30 years the UK cat population has nearly doubled to eight million. Unfortunately this population boom has been accompanied by a housing crisis for cats, with research revealing that over 30 per cent of cats are in their second or even third homes. That’s why the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming work of Cats Protection is still so important.

How you can help

CP receives no government funding and that’s why your donations and support are so important; allowing the charity to continue its work with abandoned and neglected cats. If you would like to offer a home to a CP rescue cat please visit www.cats.org.uk for details of your nearest Branch or Adoption Centre.
