On Sunday 6th July 2008 Craig Preston and Co Driver Bruce Bourke will leave Sandown Racecourse in Surrey on the 2008 Cannonball Run Europe as team CB4KIDS.
CB4KIDS are working alongside their partner charity, Kids Company, http://kidsco.org.uk/ for the arduous event. The team aim is to beat the 2007 fundraising achievement of £4,000, but also to help raise the profile and inform people of the important work of the Kids Company.
The Cannonball Run Europe is a re-incarnation of an eponymous event in the United States, first run in the 1930's. The Cannonball name originates from the die-hard adventurer Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker, the greatest cross country record breaker of them all. Baker set a number of American distance records including a 53.5hr coast to coast solo drive averaging over 50mph in 1933! Of course in more recent memory most people remember the goofy 1981 Burt Reynolds film of the same name.
The event is the automotive equivalent of a marathon. It is a high mileage endurance event which sees teams cross 8 European countries and 3,000 miles in only 5 days. The route is kept a close secret from competitors, with teams only learning the next destination as they assemble for the daily re-start. In 2007 the first 24hrs saw teams competing from London to Bratislava, via Lake Garda (1,500miles)!
Teams cross the Start line at Sandown Racecourse in Esher at 12.45 pm on Sunday 6th July, ahead of a likely 1000+ mile slog to their first rest. The event and over 70 cars return to the Finish in the UK at the Grand Hotel, Brighton on Friday 11th July.
The winner of the event is the team to get closest to an average speed of 61mph and CB4KIDS has entered the 2008 event with the aim of a Top Ten finish.
