My story

Thank you for visiting our page.  Our son, Alec, was a gorgeous nine year old who made the most of every day until passing away peacefully in January 2008 from a brain-stem tumour.  This website unites the events that his family, friends and school have chosen to dedicate to the inspiration of his courage and humour in the face of adversity.  The purpose is threefold: as an enduring way to celebrate Alec's life; to raise funds for the charities researching into ways of preventing or treating this type of illness; and to allow the overwhelming number of Alec's supporters a positive outlet for their hugely valued goodwill.  Our enormous thanks go to those who have been instrumental in raising this amazing sum so far.

Events in 2009: This was Year 3 of the (1) South West Coast Path (630 miles of coastline) which my sister and I have committed to complete in annual chunks.  We made it through Devon and to Bude in Cornwall this year with a supporting team of family at Easter and girlfriends - young and old - in September.  Elstree music teachers, led by Alec's pian teacher, Kate Addis, held a sponsored (2) "Grade One-athon" this year - see www.justgiving.com/elstreemusicians for a last chance to sponsor them.  We also held an (3) Easter Tea Party at Bucklebury Farm Park which we shall repeat in 2010 - see www.justgiving.com/easterteaparty for more details.  A cousin, Millie Shaw, celebrated a (4) Joint Nintieth Birthday Party this summer with a good friend, Lucy Menard, and they kindly asked that donations be made to Alec's Fund in lieu of presents.   More events to follow in 2010 - watch this space....

Sadly, more children now die from brain tumours than from any other childhood cancer.  Therefore, the funds raised are going to the largest single funder of lab-based brain tumour research in the UK, the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, through the recently established SDBTT Alec Normand Fund.  The Trust exists principally to find a cure for childhood and adult Brain Tumours through funding research and also offers support, hope and information to patients and their families.

Donating through this site is straightforward and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: the Charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.  So please sponsor any of us  - your donation is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks from the Normand Family
