AUGUST 2011 - WE HAVE REACHED OUR TARGET! THANK YOU ALL FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS AND PLEASE KEEP CELEBRATING ALEC.
Thank you for visiting our page. Our son, Alec, was a gorgeous nine year old who made the most of every day until passing away peacefully in January 2008 from a brain-stem tumour. This website unites the events that his family, friends and school have chosen to dedicate to the inspiration of his courage and humour in the face of adversity. The purpose is threefold: as an enduring way to celebrate Alec's life; to raise funds for the leading UK charity researching into ways of preventing or treating this (relatively underfunded) type of cancer; and to allow the overwhelming number of Alec's supporters a positive outlet for their hugely valued goodwill. Our enormous thanks go to those who have been instrumental in raising this amazing sum so far - it has allowed us to dream that we might raise £100,000 in his name.
Events: 2011 is Year 5 of the South West Coast Path (630 miles of coastline) which my lovely sister Libby Duckett, and I have committed to complete in manageable chunks. We started at Minehead in September 2007 and were a day past St Ives by May 2011. We hope to make it to Land''s End shortly, with a mixture of family and friends, and would love your support too. We are delighted that the boys at Elstree (Alec and his brother's fabulous school) have chosen to support the Fund again in their (2) Leaver's Service 2011, as Alec's friends celebrate moving on to new schools this year - thank you so much and good luck to you all. NOTE: please visit www.justgiving.com/celebratingalec2009 to view messages and donations prior to July 2010 - we had to close and reopen the page for admin purposes.
Sadly, more children and young adults now die from brain tumours than from any other cancer. Therefore, the funds raised are going to the largest single funder of lab-based brain tumour research in the UK, the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, through the recently established SDBTT Alec Normand Fund. As the charity does not deduct admin costs from named funds, 100% of your donation will go to research. The SDBTT exists principally to find a cure for childhood and adult Brain Tumours through funding research and also offers support, hope and information to patients and their families. Donating through this site is straightforward and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: the Charity will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please sponsor any of us - your donation is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks from the Normand Family
