Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our team JustGiving page.

Hi I'm Petra, team co-ordinator for our team entry for this event. I am a local personal trainer and fitness instructor. (www.confidentfitness.co.uk)

Every year I look for a new physical challenge to help raise money for a local charity. Last year it was a 24 hour spinathon, the year before a 4 hour zumbathon, and this year, it's Survival of The Fittest - a 10k run with a 30 station army assault course in the heart of London.

We have got together a 15 strong team to participate in this event in November and are looking to raise money for a local Godalming based charity - the Meath Epilepsy Trust  - to help give us focus and determination to complete this gruelling event.

Aside from the 10k run, there are a range of obstacles to overcome, including, amongst others: hay bales, deep water jump,  mud filled net crawls -  army style, ice baths, jet cold water runs, skips full of mud and water, sand bag carrying, beer keg carrying, tyre runs, monkey bar and the infamous final obstacle, an 8ft wall to scale. Did I mention this is in the midst of November?

So why are we doing this? Insanity? yes! Beer at the end? yes! But actually, to raise funds for a local charity - the Meath Epilepsy Trust. Until I started working with residents at the Meath Home based in Godalming, I was not aware of how debilitating epilepsy can be. With over 40 different types of epilepsy, the effects can be catastrophic, from paralysis, to brain damage, loss of speech, blindness etc.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects around one person in every 131 in the UK, and is the world’s most common serious neurological condition. Epilepsy starts in the brain and a seizure can occur if the signals sent and received by the brain’s nerve endings (neurons) are interrupted.

The Meath Home in Godalming (www.meath.org.uk) provides day and residential support for people with epilepsy. It offers a safe, secure, welcoming, friendly and active environment whereby everyone there can participate in a range of activities to really explore their potential and provide them with positive interaction and experience. The staff are amazing and working with them and the residents has been an incredible experience. Yet like all charitable organisations, funds are always needed to help run the trust. Hence this challenge.

So please donate whatever you can, pounds or pennies, towards our team effort.

And thank you for reading.......
