What I am doing?

(Funny, that thought has crossed my mind a couple of times since signing up for this challenge!)

On May 8th 2009 I will be setting off on a trek in the mountains of Nepal on behalf of Unicef UK. I am part of a group of volunteers who will travel to Kathmandu to join a team of local guides, sherpas and various support staff that will lead us through a steep, hilly, rocky, muddy, snowy and possibly icy (get the idea?!) trail to reach our goal: the Pike Peak summit  at just over 4000m in altitude. From our vantage point we should be able to spot Mount Everest (my next trek, yeah right) and over 100 hundred other peaks. You can see a video taken by a trekker from the top of Pike Peaks on the bottom left hand-side of this page.

All being well my sore feet and I should be back in Blightly on the 18th May 2009!

Why am I doing it?

The money I am raising will directly benefit the children of Nepal with particular regards to Health and Education aspects. UNICEF helps children receive the support, health care and education they need to survive the threats of childhood poverty - such as preventable disease or malnutrition - and grow up to become healthy adults. You can read more about their work on their website.

What else?

The trek is incredibly well organised by Across the Divide Ltd on behalf of Unicef UK. The normal plan is that a (largish) percentage of the money raised would normally be used to fund the travel costs (flights, a couple of hotel nights, bus transfer, camping equipment etc.). However, since I do not expect you - the donors - to fund my "holiday" I will be bearing those costs myself so that all the donations I receive will go to Unicef.

I am recording the progress of this project on a dedicated website - please visit it at www.trekforcharity.org.uk

Thank you in advance for your support.
