My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Anyway, just a bit more information about Raleigh international, Borneo, why I'm going there and what I'm hoping to achieve...

Raleigh is renowned for establishing project sites across different parts of the globe which aim to support the communities out there, and the environment. Borneo (the Malaysian state of Sabah in the South East of Asia) is now one of 3 locations that Raleigh has dedicated its time effort and money towards, largely contributed by you, the donators! It is the third largest island in the world, and is technically speaking divided between the 3 countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, making its overall economy hard to determine. The island is perhaps best known for the Bornean Orangutan (endangered) and some of the world's oldest rainforests.

Raleigh International, although officially founded in 1984, was the expansion of "Operation Drake" (1978-launched by Colonel John Blashford-Snell and Prince Charles), whereby youth projects were launched from ships circumnavigating the globe in order to develop self confidence and leadership through adventure, scientific exploration and community service. Raleigh then got its' name as it was the renovated Sir. Walter Raleigh Ship that continually ran a 4 year long series of international development operations which concentrated on land-based expeditions. "Raleigh International" was then established in 1992, at which point the organisation had developed a substantial range of volunteers and an emphasised ethic of quality in the overseas expeditions.

Raleigh concentrates its efforts and resources across the 2.5 million populated province of Sabah (Malaysian Borneo). The community projects there include 6 kindergartens, 3 libraries and 7 gravity water feed systems. Raleigh is increasingly developing the infrastructure of Borneo, including buildings, trail development, bridge renovation, and overall improvements that will help the Island gain better economic and environmental attributes.

I'm going out there in October, in a sense to gain the "self confidence and leadership" aspects that the expedition based itself on over 30 years ago, but also to help make a difference in less economically developed part of the world. I'm hoping the experience will give me a chance to put things into perspective, so in the long run I can perhaps get a more meaningful grasp on whatever the future holds in store for me.
