Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. 13th April 2008 saw the culmination of over 500 miles and 120 hours of training as I ran the London Marathon. This was the biggest physical challenge of my life, running 26 miles and 385 yards from Greenwich, past landmarks like Canary Wharf and the Tower of London, to finish along The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. Here's a photograph just to show that I made it to the end, which I did in a time of 3:48. So, why on earth did I do this? Well, I’ve had the latent ambition to run a marathon for the past 32 years since I was inspired by a documentary about the great Ethiopian long distance runner Abebe Bikila in advance of the 1976 Olympic Games. More recently, as part of the prolonged recovery from an illness in 2004-2006 I was encouraged to build up a structured exercise and dietary regime. This developed into my training programme. And finally I tackled the challenge. And why did I do this for Christian Aid? I’m not one to shout much about those things that are important to me, but fairness for the poor and underprivileged are at the heart of my concerns. Christian Aid is a leading charity, seeking to eradicate poverty around the world, speak out against injustice and campaign for change. Irrespective of religion, race or nationality, Christian Aid offers help to those who most need it. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also a tax efficient way to sponsor me. Christian Aid will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK tax payer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. For example, £20 could provide a family in Angola returning to their home with basic kitchen equipment, blankets, tools and seeds. £31 could pay for the materials for all the participants in an HIV/AIDS training session in Ghana. £84 could pay the annual salary of a teacher in a school in Bangladesh. So, please be generous and sponsor me. I can also receive CAF vouchers or cash if preferred. Every pound can make a difference. Thank you very much indeed for your support! Chris.
