So this year’s Christmas Appeal is more important to St. Luke’s than ever: The current economic climate is having a huge impact on fundraising income and the Hospice is currently showing a deficit in budget income expectations of £75,000.

Thank you for being generous in your support of our 2009 Christmas Appeal. We are operating in very challenging financial times – However our patients remain the core focus of our work and are the driving force in all that we do. Therefore this makes the gift that you bring us all the more special and your donation will add real value to the support we are able to give our patients and those who use our services:

St Luke’s Hospice supports thousands of people a year though various services one of which is our Day Hospice. The support given to patients during their stay cannot be overstated –

Robert Weaver attends the Day Hospice once a week said ‘’I can definitely feel a benefit since coming here, the nurses and staff understand my needs and their support is very reassuring’’

Doris Watson added ‘’ I really look forward to coming here each week, it’s brilliant, I’m able to socialise and get support in a great number of ways – even  simple things like just being able to have a laugh and joke amongst friends take on a new meaning when you don’t see many people during the rest of the week ’’

For some like Catherine Smith  Hospice support enables her to remain independent and in her own home she said ‘’Being supported by St. Luke’s not only helps me but also my family, who do not live in the immediate area, as they know I am being cared for; I am no longer able to go out on my own so being brought to the Hospice every week gives me a sense of my own independence and makes me realise that there are still things I can do for myself and I’m not in a completely hopeless situation – that means a lot to me and my family’’.

John Plews who has been attending the Day Hospice for a few weeks agreed saying ‘’the social interaction and independence is a valued element of the care he received at St. Luke’s the varied activities have given me an improved outlook on my situation and kept my brain active and occupied learning new activities: overall the Hospice has helped to reduce worry and stress and put me at ease’’.

St. Luke’s are grateful to and The Port of Tilbury for their sponsorship: As a result the money raised during this campaign can be used for direct patient care.
